The Local Grocer Launches Financial Assistance for Shoppers
North Conway — The Local Grocer is participating in an effort to help people who receive food assistance to stretch their dollars by providing them with a discount on fresh organic produce.
Through the program, Double Up Food Bucks, a program run by national non-profit organization Fair Food Network, customers who shop at The Local Grocer can get 50 percent off fresh produce purchased with electronic benefit transfer, or EBT, cards provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program. Double Up Food Bucks New Hampshire “provides SNAP recipients with significant savings on the wide range of local organic fruits and vegetables from the store’s long list of local farmers. This is an excellent way for families of the Mt. Washington Valley to eat healthy and make the most of their grocery budget,” Heather Chase, owner of The Local Grocer, said in an emailed statement on Friday.
To participate, customers must ask for the discount before they swipe at the register. The program, which includes 13 other grocery stores around New Hampshire, began in July of 2017 and has expanded throughout the years. The program will run on a continuous basis so SNAP shoppers are welcome to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at 50% off all year round at The Local Grocer.
